Section 5 Domarudden - Wira bruk

Domarudden - Wira bruk 20 km

The stretch from Domarudden recreation area to the iron works at Wira Bruk takes hikers through forest and open country, past lakes and along forest tracks that offer easy access.

Oppsjön lake, about five kilometres after Domarudden, has a picnic spot with a shelter and barbecue area. A couple of kilometres before Wira Bruk, Viren lake is a good place for a swim, with a shelter and good fishing.

The end of this section, Wira Bruk, is a unique historical environment, an idyllic spot with well preserved forges and red cottages. The iron works were built in the 1630s by Admiral Claes Fleming and became the countrys first sword smithy. Wira Bruk had the exclusive right to make rapiers, sabres and bayonets for the Swedish crown between 1646 and 1775. The majority of the swords used in King Karl XII:s wars were made here. At the height of their production, Wiras smithies produced 12 000 swords per year!

Several wrought-iron smiths now work in the area. You can purchase their artistic creations at the inspectors residence. The works' museum is in the alderman's house near the court house, and the brewhouse is a charming little café by the Viraån river. For ten days every summer, the well known pageant Wira-spelen is performed in the amphitheatre in nearby Isaks äng.
